Abstract

Police Traffic Division statistics for Jamaica (the largest English speaking island in the Caribbean) were reviewed for the year 1985-1990. Data revealed that the majority of fatal accidents occurred between 3 and 6pm (23%) and involved mainly pedestrians (44%). Vulnerable road users (pedestrians, motor and pedal cyclists along with their passengers) accounted for 65% of fatalities. The month of December accounted for the highest proportion of fatalities (11%). Fatalities and injuries were concentrated around the metropole namely Kingston & St Andrew and St Catherine (greater than 40% of fatalities and injuries). Some factors contributing to this scenario were identified. (A).
