A safety review of part of the Iceland Ring Road was carried out in October 1998. The study involved two main aspects: (1) and analysis of accident and traffic flow records along the route; and (2) a drive and, were appropriate, a walk through of nearly 350 kilometres of road between Reykjavik and Akureyri, using a checklist to review the condition of the road surface, the traffic signs, carriageway markings, junction control and alignment, access control and safety fence standards. The study combined the UK practice of carrying out an accident investigation of a route based on historical accident records with the practice adopted in Australia and New Zealand where a safety audit is carried out on an existing road. The paper summarises some of the findings of this study and draws out policy implications for road safety audit practice in European countries. (A)
