Abstract

Visibility factors that affect the performance and effectiveness of highway signing are reviewed by the author, after which he concludes that, although much is known about elements of the sign system in use, there is a need for system-wide analysis with emphasis on user-oriented needs for freeway-arterial interfaces, major street identification, urban signing, and pedestrians. Discussions of T.W. Forbes and Richard A. Olsen are included. (See also B 580).
