Abstract

An important number of daily journeys in the Netherlands are made by bicycle. The Dutch government supports the use of the bicycle and improves the safety by the improvement of the infrastructure for bicycle traffic. The construction of special bicycle tunnels and bridges is part of the improvement in the road infrastructure. The design of gradients for these tunnels and bridges is mainly concentrated on the gradient when the bicycle is going up, but going down is also important. For when going down, the speed can become too high and cause accidents. Today, the gradient for going up is taken as a measure and for going down the gradient is mostly the same. Therefore, specifications are presented to determine the gradients at both sides of bicycle tunnels and bridges.
