Abstract

In most of Australia it is illegal to ride a bicycle on a footpath. Many parents tell their children to ride on the footpath, as they consider this is safer than riding on a road. Some accident data suggest that footpath cycling does not lead to many accidents. Engineering design guidelines are necessary for shared and segregated footways.
