Abstract

The Roads and Traffic Authority of New South Wales (RTA) has adopted the international standard IEC 61508 as a basis for safety lifecycle management in the development of a new generation of intelligent transport system. This paper describes the application of a rigorous process for functional safety management to the development of version 7 of the advanced traffic management system SCATS (Sydney Coordinated Adaptive Traffic System). The 16-phase lifecycle from IEC 61508 has been defined for the development and the first five phases have been addressed. The remaining phases and other future work are described.
