Abstract
The hypothesis is often heard that on 80 km /h highways the speed limit is exceeded very much and very often. Therefore many accidents will occur and therefore there must be done something. However there are in the Netherlands no national systemetically collected data available to endorse this hypothesis. A pilot study was carried out on different categories on 80 km /h roads. At the end of 1988 measurements were done in four sample areas. Results of the measurements show that the speed limits are exceeded frequently and to a great extent.
