This document presents the experience of implementing one of the very first integrated ITS solutions for a private highway concessionaire in Brazil, more specifically the Rio-Niteroi Bridge Traffic Control and Surveillance System. Special attention will be given to two aspects: the on line system architecture developed to support integrated control actions, and the difficulties of being a pioneer in a new and inexperienced field on Brazilian engineering. In the conclusions of this paper an attempt is made to point out the key findings of the experience, including the most important problems and the critical factors for the success of this kind of project.
