Abstract

The paper describes an attempt at providing a quantitative assessment of the relative risks associated with the carriage of dangerous goods in tunnels. Three tunnels in the Oslo area were selected for study and a model was developed for calculating the probable risks associated with some likely types of accidents involving cargo with dangerous properties. Corresponding studies were made of alternative routes on the surface. Probable risk attributable to traffic accidents was also established. The paper is based on the project report FARLIG GODS I VEGTUNNELER (Dangerous Goods in Road Tunnels) prepared for the Directorate of Roads by Technica a/s, Stavanger, Norway. The report is dated 1989-10-27.
