Abstract

This book calls into question the validity of an enormous amount of road safety regulation. It is divided into 11 chapters: 1, road safety: perspectives on problems; 2, engineering theology and Smeed's law; 3, engineering solutions: safer vehicles; 4, engineering solutions: safer roads; 5, behavioural solutions: seat belts; 6, behavioural solutions: motorcycle helmets; 7, behavioural solutions: the US and Great Britain; 8, hypotheses and lotteries; 9, the emperor's new clothes; 10, risk and freedom; and 11, epilogue: seat belts in Britain.
