Abstract

This report presents the results of a laboratory study testing specific notions of a utility theory of decision- making in traffic proposed to accommodate the so- called "risk compensation" phenomenon observed in aggregate accident statistics. It is concluded that subjects, when put in a decision- structure assumed to underly behavior in traffic, display risk compensation as a response to changes in parameters controlling accident risk.
