Abstract

The authors calculated the relative risks of death for alcohol-impaired drivers compared with non-impaired drivers. The analyses were based on road traffic accidents (RTAs) that occurred in Japan between 1986 and 2001. Data were compiled by the Japan Institute for Traffic Accident Research and Data Analysis. The authors analysed data on all RTAs involving motorcycles and four-wheeled vehicles. Deaths were limited to those occurring within 24 hours after the accident.
