This short report has presented an analysis of risk of crash involvement estimates for 1988 in Metropolitan Melbourne. By necessity, the analysis was age based, in constrast to the original work which was primarily experience based. It was noted that factors other than the ambient level may have affected the incidence of reported crashes, perhaps reducing the direct comparability of the two sets of results. Nevertheless, the same general patterns of results have been obtained, namely the increased risk of crash involvement for younger drivers, the approximate equivalence of risk as a function of driver gender, and the elevated risk of night-time driving, particularly after midnight, and for 19 year old drivers.
