Abstract

A calendar of events affecting road safety and traffic from 1903 to 1988 is presented, followed by a list of review topics from 1951-1988. The review of road traffic accidents in 1988 contains sections on: elderly casualties; drinking and driving; lighting and accidents; motorcycle casualties; the cost of accidents; and motor insurance claims. Tables are provided on accident trends 1978-1988. This includes statistics of vehicle population, traffic and road lengths, accidents and accident rates by road class and severity, by time of accident and severity, casualty rates, vehicles and drivers involved. Detailed tables are provided that break down these statistics still further to include the effects of daylight and darkness, speed limits, road classification, weather conditions, road surface condition, lighting conditions, and vehicle and road user types (including the age and sex of the road user).
