Abstract

A calender of events affecting road safety and traffic from 1903 to 1989 is presented. Tables are provided on accident trends, 1979 to 1989. This includes statistics of vehicle population, traffic and road lengths, accidents and accident rates by road class and severity of injury, by time of accident and severity, casualty rates, vehicles and drivers involved. Detailed tables are provided that break down these statistics still further to include the effects of daylight and darkness, speed limits, weather conditions, road surface conditions, road lighting conditions, and vehicle and road user types (including the age and sex of the road user). Each year in this publication some review articles are published. In the 1989 volume the following are included: (1) General review of road traffic accidents 1989 (Ackroyd, R.); (2) Drinking and driving in Great Britain (Jones, D.); (3) Seat belt use by car occupants (Broughton, J.); (4) The new child seat belt legislation (Jones, D.); (5) Hit and run accidents (Vickers, J.); (6) Child casualties in road accidents (Jones, D.); (7) Pedal cyclist casualties (Taylor, S.); and (8) Pedestrian casualties (Ho, Y.S.). For the abstracts of these articles see IRRD nos. 846338-846347.
