Abstract

This annual publication is the Department of Transport's major publication on road accidents. It gives statistics of road accidents and their resulting casualties. A calendar of events affecting road safety and traffic from 1903-1991 is presented. Tables are provided on accident trends 1980-1991 with some historical series. This includes statistics of vehicle population, traffic and road lengths, accidents and accident rates by road class and severity of injury, by time of accident and severity, casualty rates, vehicle and drivers involved. Detailed tables are provided that break down these statistics still further to include the effects of daylight and darkness, speed limits, weather conditions, road surface conditions, lighting conditions and vehicle and road user types (including age and sex of the road user). Each year in this publication some review articles are published. In the 1991 volume the following are included: (1) General review of road traffic accidents in 1991 (Ackroyd,R); (2) The collection, collation and analysis of personal injury accident data (Langan,J); (3) Road accident statistics in peace and war in Britain 1930-1951 (White,BM); (4) Forty years on (Jones,R); (5) The involvement of alcohol in fatal accidents to adult pedestrians (Everest,J); (6) If you double your mileage, do you double your risk? (Lockwood,C); (7) Uses of the vehicle number plate data (Munster,A); (8) Fatal road accidents and loss of life expectancy (Brown,C); and (9) Costing road accidents (McMahon,K).
