Abstract

This annual publication is the Department of Transport's major publication on road accidents. It gives statistics of road accidents and their resulting casualties. A calendar of events affecting road safety and traffic from 1903-1993 is presented. Tables are provided on accident trends 1982-1993 with some historical series. This includes statistics of vehicle population, traffic and road lengths, accidents and accident rates by road class and severity of injury, by time of accident and severity, casualty rates, vehicle and drivers involved. Detailed tables are provided that break down these statistics still further to include the effects of daylight and darkness, speed limits, weather conditions, road surface conditions, lighting conditions and vehicle and road user types (including age and sex of the road user). Each year in this publication some review articles are published. In the 1993 volume the following are included: (1) General review of personal injury road accidents in Great Britain in 1993 (Ackroyd, R.); (2) Long-term trends in road accident casualties (Broughton, J.); (3) Child pedestrian safety in Great Britain (O'Reilly, D.); and (4) Road safety publicity campaigns (Hooke, S.). For the abstracts of these articles see C 3060 - 3063
