Abstract

A table is presented giving statistics on vehicle numbers and data on the number of fatal road accidents, fatalities and rates for 1990-2003 in South Africa. The 1996 Road Traffic Management Strategy included the Arrive Alive road safety campaign, which focused on traffic law enforcement and communication. The Road to Safety Strategy 2001-2005 was implemented to promote law compliance and enforcement; operator, driver and vehicle fitness; infrastructure, management and information systems; and communication, public education and participation. In 1999, a new accident report form and a revised procedure for the collection and recording of accident information were introduced. The number of fatal accidents decreased from 1990 to 1999 and then increased.
