This chapter describes the RACS system (Road-Automobile Communication System) in Japan, and methods now used to promote its use. An outline of the system architecture and design is provided. This includes data on: a) the functions; b) the wavelengths and type of beacons used for transmission; c) the data form; and d) the vehicle mounted receiver. Methods and organisations used to promote use of both RACS and another system called AMTICS (Advanced Mobile Traffic Information and Communication System) are described. These two systems are now incorporated within a new project called Vehicle Information Communication System (VICS). The new organisations VICS Promotion Council.
