Abstract

This publication provides a national statistical summary of road crashes resulting in hospital admission in 1991. Commencing with the 1990 issue, the publication replaces and enhances the discontinued Australian Bureau of Statistics publication 'Road Traffic Accidents Involving Casualties, Australia'. Data from two sources are presented in respect of 1991. National police road crash data are presented primarily to summarize crash characteristics. National hospital admissions records are used to assess the extent of road crash hospitalisation and to evaluate specific characteristics of those hospitalised. The overall police and hospital counts are also compared in an assessment of the relative strenghts of the two data sources. Comparisons are also made between characteristics of fatal and hospitalisation crashes.
