Abstract

This is the first issue of a revised annual statistical summary of fatal road crashes and road fatalities in Australia. It continues the series Road Fatality Statistics Australia under a new title. Although representing a continuation of that series, this publication is in many respects a substantially new document. Additional data items are provided and information is presented at a higher level of disaggregation and with enhanced graphical treatment. An extended set of road fatality time series is included and a comparison is given of long term trends in road fatality rates against death rates from other causes. This issue presents fatal crash data for 1993 and makes comparisons with 1989 and 1992. The data derive primarily from a fatal crash data base compiled each month by the Federal Office of Road Safety using fatal crash unit record data forwarded from police and transport authorities in each state and territory. The publication also presents some fatal crash information from other sources, including the blood alcohol concentration of fatally injured operators and overseas road fatality rates. (A).
