Abstract

The aims of this paper are: 1) to explain that road factors are significant in road traffic crashes; 2) to highlight key issues in designing safer roads in less motorised countries; 3) to discuss various road engineering design features and to demonstrate their potential in reducing crashes and their severity; and 4) to introduce strategies for safety improvements to existing road networks with particular regard to implications of low cost engineering measures.
