Abstract

The transport industries have played a leading role in Australia's economic development. Road is the most important mode in terms of tonnage and many activities rely on an efficient road freight system. The road transport industry carries about 60 per cent of road freight. The industry is segmented into different types of operations and participants range from a large number of owner drivers to a few Australian multinational companies. The road transport industry is a major user of the road system and has a great interest in the continued provision of adequate road facilities.
