Abstract

Lighting standards of urban roads and streets in european community countries are examined.Although lighting standards basically follow CIE recommendations actual standards in practice concerning road surface lighting are said to vary considerably. While the actual lighting equipment components are better standardised there is a lack of standardising design methods.Road lighting systems are primarily installed to reduce road accidents and are usually set up to take account of amenity and visual comfort. It is considered that there is a need for further safety research aimed at establishing the relationship between lighting level and accidents.
