Abstract

Current and proposed CIE recommendations for main road lighting are described and compared with British practice. The calculations required for the new CIE proposals are discussed and the proposals themselves are critically examined. It is concluded that elaborate design methods for street lighting are undesirable in Great Britain and that the present British method of specifying lantern light output and light distribution and lantern lay-out geometry in relation to road width is for more practical and satisfactory.
