Abstract

There has been a clear awakening in developing countries of the necessityto maintain existing road networks such that these infrastructures enablethe sustainable development of the economy, and continued access to services as required by the local population. The implementation of efficient road management, however, necessitates major reforms in terms of financing, definition of responsibilities of the administration, organization of services, and the role of the private sector. This session will provide an updated review on two subjects: how to secure sustainable maintenance; and how to support the emergence and development of the local construction industry (private sector) and its role in road management. For the covering abstract see ITRD E139491.
