Abstract

Road pavements in Australia are reviewed historically and structurally with emphasis on the development of pavement technology and the part played by research. Characteristics of low cost and modern pavements are described in terms of the material type in the top structural layer; unbound, cemented, concrete or asphalt. Brief comment is made on drainage, construction and maintenance practice.
