Abstract

In order to preserve the historical center, for a long time the core of the city in the European culture, an innovative concept to reduce the impact of congestion is described using the possibility of accessing protected zones paying the use of the common and limited available resources. For many years Genoa has been interested in testing of this measure, with its participation to European projects. Actually the city of Genoa is involved in the PROGRESS Project to demonstrate integrated urban transport pricing schemes, develop and assess the political, social and economic framework, test the OCR technology and evaluate the impact of the demonstration. The paper deals with the Municipality experience in the PROGRESS Project, focusing particularly on the social aspects generated by the road pricing implementation.
