Part one of this annual report contains the following selected highlights of work in progress; automated public transport a study for an aid to pedestrian movement, economic assessment of alternative policies for traffic restraint; traffic noise; channel tunnel ferry wagons; speed/flow relations on suburban main roads: child safety, car safety programme; road salting and vehicle corrosion; rural hydrology; accelerated methods of testing concrete; a round table conference on overseas highway problems. Part two summarizes work on current research items. The report also contains seven appendices, one of which describes full- scale experiments begun during the year on bridge behaviour, structural properties, traffic systems, urban transport planning and environment.
