Abstract

The OECD Road Research Programme called for a symposium on the 14th-16th May 1979. To review present research and experience in member countries on the safety of pedestrians and cyclists. The present report is a summary record of the discussions held at the symposium and lists the conclusions and recommendations. The symposium was divided into 6 sessions: (1) background; (2) behavioural countermeasures; (3) physical countermeasures; (4) data requirements and evaluation; (5) general assessment; (6) conclusions and recommendations. This report contains recommendations on an integrated approach to pedestrian and cyclist safety and develops a comprehensive set of countermeasures that could be directly applied. A list of further research needs is also included. (A)
