Abstract

Revision work has been carried out on two Czech standards: Measurement of evenness of pavement by straightedge, and Measurement of evenness of pavement by "compensating viagraph". The revision was necessary since highway constructors have been endeavouring to improve the riding quality of pavements, and laboratories have been making progress in their knowledge and ability to measure and analyse this parameter. Recently there has been considerable evolution in riding quality measuring techniques. Progress is especially evident in the case of longitudinal surface roughness. Use of continuous profilometric survey methods by high performance dynamic systems has been developed. Measurement of transverse surface roughness has become necessary as part of pavement management systems. The object of the revision is to standardise new techniques and equipment at present used for measurements of riding quality in the Czech Republic.
