Abstract

The effects of recent changes to the UK Design Standard HD19 - Road Safety Audits, which forms part of the Design Manual for Roads and Bridges, on road safety audit (RSA) teams are considered. The RSA Brief instructs the audit team and any specialist advisors on their role in the audit. On motorway and trunk schemes in the UK, the project sponsor is formally responsible for issuing the audit brief. The appointment of RSA teams and the levels of training and experience that are expected of road safety auditors are outlined. The four stages of a project where RSAs are conducted are described: completion of preliminary design, completion of detailed design, completion of construction and after monitoring.
