Abstract

Countries in the developing world are characterized by rapid urbanization, high growth rates in traffic, congestion, and decreasing regulation of public transport. Because a majority of the developing worlds' inhabitants are dependent on public transport services the need for efficient, safe and effective public transport is essential to ensure adequate and affordable accessibility and for sustainable urban development. This paper highlights the operational environment of the public transport sector in Nepal, India and Zimbabwe, the extent of bus accidents and their likely causes, and makes recommendations to reduce both the severity and number of public transport accidents in the future. (A) The French title of the paper is: "Sécurité routière pour les autobus".
