Abstract

The standard of safety in traffic is dependent to a growing extent on the effectiveness of communication between the main three group of protagonists - vehicle manufacturers, the authorities and road users. The information which must reach all parties involved can be classified into the following main areas: active safety, passive safety, direct safety and indirect safety. SCANIA contributes to the development of active safety with its ABS and ELB ABS. SCANIA ABS is an anti-lock brake system which overcomes some shortcomings of air brake systems and improves the retardation performance. SCANIA ELB ABS is a brake system with electrical control. It sends electrical control signals to various axles of a vehicle. So, it applies the wheel brakes faster and simultaneously. The paper also discusses vehicle dimensions and concludes that it would be logical to strive for a development towards vehicles with higher capacity in terms of load length and load volume.
