Abstract

This paper presents an experimental comparison of four different approaches to reducing the accident involvement of drivers in large companies because of changed driver behaviour. The four approaches used were: (1) driver training; (2) road safety campaigns; (3) group discussion methods; and (4) bonus systems for accident-free driving. The purpose of the experiment was to compare the effectiveness of these methods in reducing accident risks and accident costs. The experiment was conducted on four different test groups and one control group, for which none of the measures was applied, within the Swedish telephone company Televerket. A sample of at least 900 drivers from the company was chosen for each group. Only those accidents caused by company drivers were used in the evaluation. Accident risk was calculated as accidents per distance travelled, during a period from two years before the introduction of a measure to two years after. Each participating driver answered a questionnaire, but the questionnaire results are not presented here. The results showed cost decreases in all four test groups, especially the group discussion group. Accident risks were significantly reduced for all test groups except campaign.
