Abstract

Alcohol, drugs and fatigue are established causes of road crashes. Conducting research into the extent of the road safety problems associated with these factors, and into the various methods of dealing with the menace of drink and drug driving, and driving while fatigued, is a priority for the UK Government. Research to date has improved our knowledge of the extent of the problem and, in recent years, has focused more on ways to improve the enforcement techniques available to the police, and on developing educational programmes aimed at dealing with traffic offenders.
