Abstract
The array of safety programmes which are presently in place in New Zealand are reviewed in some details:they are road use programmes, traffic engineering measures and road design, construction and maintenance, vehicle programmes, and support, servicing and research.Four constraints to improved safety are identified and the need to make the most effective use of available resources is stressed. It is concluded that an assault on traffic accidents on all fronts must continue existing programmes should not be lightly discarded and the balance between prevention and resoration costs should be constantly examined.
