Abstract

This paper provides detailed evidence as to the problems of road safety and describes some of the past, current and proposed remedies in new south wales and, to a degree, in australia generally, many of which will be applicable to other heavily motorised countries. Of particular note are reviews of seat belt, child restraint and motorcyclist helmet usage, performance and developments; the future of occupant protection generally; the attitudes of motorcycle riders to official intervention for their safety; drink - driving (and "riding"); and roadside power poles.
