Abstract

This publication contains a cross section of articles relating to some of the most important road safety studies undertaken by the greater London road safety unit as part of a programme of accident investigation and remedial work. The articles are as follows: reduced vehicle precedence times at fixed time pelican crossings (Brownfield, DJ); reduced vehicle precedence times at vehicle actuated pelican crossings (Brownfield, DJ); increased crossing times at pelican crossings (Kelly, MS); the effect on right turning accidents of closely associated secondary traffic signals (Lalani, N); port to port turning movements at signal controlled junctions - accident analysis (Brownfield, DJ); increased intergreen periods at signal controlled junctions - a solution to certain types of cross-road collisions (Brownfield, DJ); the junction safety experiment (phases 1, 2, 3) (Lalani, N); the greater London "ride bright" campaign - its effect on motorcyclist conspicuity and casualties (Lalani, N and Holden, EJ); the effects of mandatory school entrance markings (Brownfield, DJ); street lighting improvements on major sections of principal roads in greater London - before and after accident study (Lalani, N); the use of statistical tests in the analysis of accidents and other associated data (Brownfield, DJ).
