This report addresses three main areas to review road safety in victoria. They are: i) trends in the road toll; ii) past and current road safety initiatives; and iii) future initiatives. Victoria's road toll has been progressively reduced over the past 12 years to the extent that the fatality rate (per 10,000 vehicles registered) has been more than halved (from 8.1 in 1970 to 3.4 in 1982). the Victorian fatality rate has remained consistently below the corresponding rate for the rest of Australia in this period. Victoria is held in high regard, both nationally and internationally, in the road safety field. Since it led the world by making seat belt wearing compulsory in 1970, the state has continued as an innovator in the development, implementation and evaluation of road safety measures. This report reviews road safety activities in victoria during the past 12 years and presents a range of future initiatives to ensure the continuation of the downward trend in the road toll.
