Abstract

The improvement of traffic management and the development of a large market for ITS services on the Trans European Road Network require efficient data exchange based upon interoperable systems. In order to meet this major requirement, traffic data exchange has formed the subject of permanent activities for many years in Europe. This paper considers various sides of the European situation in this field: (1) the recent achievements in the domain of standardisation and their link with the so called Memorandum of Understanding which conveys the EU policy, (2) a zoom on the French context and on the main lessons learnt by the French Road Administration from those of the 4th Framework Programme projects in which they were involved, and (3) the respective roles of public and private partners with respect to the chain of information in several European countries.
