Abstract

The empirically obtained steady state flow-journey speed relations obtained by Wardrop are used to arrive at a continuum global model describing the dynamics of inner city traffic flow. Under highly congested road conditions where empirical results are not available intuitive arguments are used to complete the picture. The traffic control implications (including traffic jam relief) of this model are briefly discussed.
