THE PRESENT PAPER PUTS FORWARD SEVERAL REASONS WHY IT MAY NOW BE TIMELY TO IDENTIFY THE ROAD-DATA NEEDS OF THOSE RESPONSIBLE FOR FORMING AND EVALUATING POLICY IN A NUMBER OF DIFFERENT FIELDS, TO DESCRIBE THE DATA CORE OF COMMON USEFULNESS, AND TO PROMOTE CO-SPONSORSHIP OF INCREASINGLY EXPENSIVE DATA COLLECTION. INFORMATION ROAD USE IS PRINCIPALLY DISCUSSED IN RELATION TO ROAD SAFETY RESEARCH, ENVIRONMENTAL QUALITY CONTROL AND ENERGY CONSERVATION.
