Improving road safety, enhancing mobility and reducing traffic congestionwill depend on the ability to finance these objectives for the long-term. Road tolling and road user charging offer the basis for building a self-financing and environmentally-conscious transportation infrastructure. This paper evaluates the state of play of tolling systems and road user charging models and outlines efficient solutions as key drivers for future intelligent road planning and intelligent use of road infrastructure.
