Abstract

Weather incidents like thunderstorms and strong showers, fog, chilling humidity, and snowfall do not only represent serious safety risks, they also prevent the driver from keeping the desired driving speed. The newly developed service "Road Weather Information System (RWIS)", which could enhance the BMW Assist V-Info+ service, uses different data sources (radar, roadside weather detection systems, Extended Floating Car Data - XFCD, etc.) to generate immediate, route related messages of driving behaviour influencing weather and road conditions and to disseminate them via RDS-TMC, in future via Digital Broadcast / TPEG. The RWIS distribution chain - from data generation to information representation in the car - will be explained and methods of quality control will be presented. For the covering abstract see ITRD E134653.
