Abstract

The report tries to summarise the accumulated knowledge on the topic behavioural and attitudinal aspects related to road works. The knowledge has been gained by reviewing relevant literature in the area. To structure the reviewing and analysing of the collected literature, an assessment "model" - in the form of a review sheet - was developed by the partners involved in the task. The research reported here was undertaken by a European consortium, the `Advanced Research on ROad Workzone Safety in Europe' project (ARROWS) under the Transport Workprogramme within the EC's Fourth Framework. The objectives of the work reported were to: (1) Collect available information (data) about road users' behaviour when confronted to road works, road users' attitudes to road works, and road users' experienced problems when passing road work; (2) Describe and compile the gained knowledge in a structured way; and (3) Estimate the impact of the identified effects on safety and passability.
