Abstract

In an era when the demand for funds for the construction and maintenance of roads generally exceeds available funds, it is increasingly important that works are carried out in the most cost effective manner. A course selection process for materials is presented. Remote sensing techniques are being developed which use satellite data and aircraft- mounted radar to provide information on rock and soil types, vegetation and drainage patterns. The techniques are seen as being particularly useful in remote areas where mapping of any type may be of poor quality or non- existent.
