Abstract

Following a brief historical introduction which deals with the part roads have played in the evolution of society since the earliest human communities were formed, a discussion of how the urban circulation system has been disaggregated in terms of roles over the ensuing centuries - and particularly, since the Industrial Revolution - is presented.
