Abstract

The main thesis of this paper is that roadway and roadside design must be understood and evaluated in the broader "sustainable development" context to be useful and applicable to the conditions of the country under review. The proposition can be applied to any developing country. Sri Lanka is used as a case study, to substantiate the argument. A brief introduction to Sri Lanka is followed by a discussion of the conceptualisation of the theme of the paper, the research problem and the theoretical reasoning. The hypothesis is presented and a model that incorporates the principal factors that affect roadway and roadside design in Sri Lanka. This is followed by data based case studies of four highways with an analysis and a final policy conclusion. (A)
