Abstract

High-mast lighting introduces a number of new variables to roadway design. Pole locations no longer follow the road. Mounting heights and fixture quantities can vary from pole to pole. Fixtures can have either symmetrical or asymmetrical distribution. This paper discusses these variables and presents design methods that can be used to ensure high system utilization. An economic comparison between high-mast and traditional techniques also is presented.
